The best ways to run your heat pump system

Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant levels can impair your heat pump’s ability to transfer heat effectively, resitting in reduced heating or cooling.

Electrical Problems

Faulty wiring, damaged components, or electrical failures can cause your heat pump to stop working altogether or operate erratically.

Compressor Issues

The Compressor is the heart of your heat pump system. Problems such as compressor failure or overheating can lead to a complete system shutdown.

Frozen Coils

Ice buildup on the evaporator coils can obstruct airflow and cause your heat pump to malfunction, particularly during colder months.

Why should I get my heat pump serviced?

We recommend an annual service to ensure that your heat pump is running at its best and to maintain product warranties.

Annual Air Source and Ground Source Servicing is highly advised to keep your heat pump running at peak performance and avoid costly replacement of parts. I regularly take on systems I did not install and become responsible for poorly installed and maintained units so I would always advise on getting it regularly inspected.

Suggestion

Positioning Your Heat Pump for Lower Bills & Better Performance

Ensure your heat pump is receiving adequate airflow

Adequate airflow is vital for your heat pump’s efficiency and longevity. Keep vents clear, clean filters regularly, and maintain space around the unit to prevent blockages. Proper airflow ensures consistent heating and cooling, reduces energy costs, and helps your system perform at its best year-round.

Keep heat pump clear of obstructions

Avoid storing garden furniture or tools and materials away from the Heat pump unit. I often see plant pots, paving slabs and sweeping brushes blocking the side and back of the fan unit which overtime can cause the lifespan of the heat pump to be reduced and lose efficiency levels.

Noise cancellation

If possible we would recommend avoiding positioning the unit directly outside or below a bedroom window. There will always be occasions where you may not be able to sleep and when they occur the slightest sound, like the refrigerator downstairs in the kitchen, becomes an irritant.

Shelter from the weather

One final consideration is if you live in an area that is prone to extreme weather changes. Avoid positioning your unit against a wall that snow might pile against or that may pool water when raining. If the snow was to drift against the unit and reduce its air flow, it would reduce its efficiency and its output as a result.

Care

Aspects of the Service and why it's important to get it done

When enquiring about a heat pump service, please let us know the following:

  • The make of the air source heat pump or ground source heat pump you have.

  • The location where you are based, and when the system last had a service

    • Inspecting and testing refrigerant levels, looking for evidence of leaks inside outdoor unit.

  • Cleaning air filters, coils, and other internal parts to remove dust and debris, ensuring optimal airflow and energy transfer.

  • Checking electrical connections, wiring, and the integrity of the control system for safety and proper function.

  • Inspecting components like the compressor, fan motors, and bearings for wear and tear.

  • Measuring flow rates, checking amperage, voltage, and kWh consumption, and verifying correct system set-up.

  • Testing safety devices, checking the expansion vessel, and bleeding any air from the system.

  • Cleaning out components checking correct refrigerant levels ensures the heat pump operates as efficiently as possible, reducing energy consumption.

  • Routine checks can identify small issues before they become major problems, preventing expensive repairs.

  • A professional service ensures all electrical and mechanical components are functioning safely

  • Many manufacturers require annual servicing to keep the system's warranty valid.

  • Regular servicing ensures the system is set up correctly for your home's heating needs, maximizing its effectiveness.
