Anyone living in England, Scotland or Wales can apply for government grants that cut the cost of installing an air source heat pump. Find out which grants you can apply for.

In England and Wales, the main available heat pump grant is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which offers up to £7,500 towards the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump. This scheme provides an upfront grant that is applied for by the installer on your behalf. To be eligible, you must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) from the last 10 years and not be in a new-build property. Property owners in Scotland can access separate support through Home Energy Scotland, while the scheme for Northern Ireland is closed. What it covers:

The scheme provides a capital grant for replacing fossil fuel heating systems, such as oil, gas, or LPG, with a heat pump or biomass boiler.

  • £7,500 for an air source heat pump.

  • £7,500 for a ground source heat pump (including water source and shared ground loops).

  • Eligibility:

  • You must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) from the past 10 years, with no recommendations for cavity wall or loft insulation.

    • New build homes are not eligible for the scheme.

What to do next:

  1. Check eligibility: Visit the GOV.UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme page to confirm you meet all the requirements.

  2. Contact an installer: If you are in England or Wales, speak to a certified installer to discuss getting a quote and applying for the grant on your behalf.
